UFO activity; different phenomena or one single phenomenon?

The UFO activity in Hessdalen has a great range, and many have questioned whether there is one single phenomenon present - or if there are two (or more) phenomena that exist side by side.

Project manager Erling Strand has for example. said:

"It's so much different. We get conflicting measurement data. Some point in one direction, while other data point in the opposite direction."

Italian phd. in astrophysics, Teodorani, has said:

"The majority of observed phenomena in Hessdalen have external plasma-like features, while a small number of structured solid objects have been observed. It may be one phenomenon observed under different physical conditions or two separate phenomena coexisting."

Project Hessdalen divides the activity into three categories:

1: Flash. Pointed concentrated flashes of short duration, or powerful flashes that illuminates much of the sky and the surrounding terrain.

2: Yellow and white lights moving around the valley, that can stand still or move at high speeds.

3: Multiple lights together that follow each other as if they were attached to an object. Sometimes something dark / black can be seen between these lights.

From this, one can raise (at least) two hypotheses:

- Flashes and balls of light vs. structured solid objects are separate phenomena where the former must be understood as unknown natural phenomena related to geophysical conditions and combustion processes in the atmosphere - while the latter is a technology - man-made, or related to some form of visitation

Or:

- Flashes, balls of light AND structured solid objects are components of the same technology and constitute a unit.

My impression and my claim is that there is support for the view that ALL of the activity are components of the same phenomenon - if you look closely at the report material:


Hessdalen: Three illuminated UFOs:

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1982, AT 6.20pm, one of the residents in Hessdalen saw an oblong luminous object as it flew low over the crest of Finnsåhøgda to the north. In binoculars he could clearly see that there was a red light in the front of the object.

As this object came in a northerly direction, another dull moon colored light appeared in the northeast. It moved on towards the other elongated object, and flashed several times during this journey. 

At the same time, a third object, spherical, appeared about 70 degrees above the observer. This also pulsated before it finally went out.

Comment: Related to Project Hessdalen's categorisation these are category 2 and 3 together; - balls of light and solid objects (crafts) interact.

Reitan 87;  big flashes, balls of light and a craft:

16 October 1987; 7. 20 pm, three adults and a child were traveling by car between Tydal and Reitan
(some 10-15 km east of Hessdalen). On the road between the mountains they initially saw several star-like balls of light passing overhead at a great speed. 

The sky was all clear and the wind intermittently gusted up to storm. A few minutes later about 7.20pm, they saw a bright flash of light which illuminated the sky towards Ålen (some 10 km to the NW). The light seemed brightly greenish, and they stopped the car and turned off the lights after another flash had appeared. Each flash lasted for about 3- 4 seconds, with a period of 1 minute between them. 

Shortly after the last one, they caught sight of an object which came flying relatively low above the terrain. The object was shaped like a prism, equipped with four legs underneath. 

All details were clearly visible; the object coming downwards in front of the car, flying slowly forward, making a brief halt and then disappearing right up into the sky. The observers stated that the object must have been large. 

The observation lasted some 30 seconds. All four people felt a certain pressure in their heads both during the observation and shortly afterwards. (This symptom has also been felt by some
other witnesses who have observed UFOs in Hessdalen.) The observers were also a bit frightened and none of them had seen anything similar before. (Source: Nordic UFO Newsletter, 1, 1988).

Comment: Here all of the categories - 1, 2 and 3 appear together.


Arendal, Norway, 1981; i.e. not from Hessdalen - but very similar to HD sightings:

- Suddenly he became aware of a light in the eastern sky blinking and pulsating fast and irregurlarly. The light moved up and down with a blue blinking, sometimes weak and sometimes very. strong,
and after a little while it disappeared towards the east. Now and then the flashes were so powerful that the ground around the house was lit up as if someone was using a big flashgun out in the woods, far from roads and from any electric outdoor light. They also stated that it did not resemble the distinctive flashes of distant lightning as can be seen in the autumn.

The house is situated on a high spot surrounded by low hills and forests. In front of the house grassy fields run down towards Blagestad. To the northeast there are small islands and hills with low pinetrees. The family now turned off all the lights in the house and sat down behind the windows watching the sky. After an hour of patient waiting, the UFOs appeared again.

Suddenly a shivering yellow light appeared over the southern hills. The object rose and fell and the light shifted from yellow to blue. After a little while, it quickly soared to an altitude of 45 degrees and at the same time another object came in from the northeast and stopped at the same altitude.

Then a huge gray object came in from the south and passed within 50 meters of the house and glided silently towards the lake along the edge of the fields. Over the lake it descended slowly, so it was possible to observe it with the island and pinetrees as a background. The distance was then about 200-300 meters. At both ends they could see a very big red light, and on top of that they claimed there was something like a bridge. 

The light from the two red spots was very unfamiliar, and they had difficulties in describing it. (In the southeastern part of the country this cigar-shaped phenomenon had been seen a few years
ago, and then too the witnesses noticed the very odd red lights and eported that there seemed to be something rotating inside them.)

It was a great shock to the family to see this strange, huge UFO with its dark and silent body and clear red lights; They thought for a while that it was an invasion, and turned on the radio for the kind of short message that one would expect to get under such circumstances.

Over the water the cigar changed course and headed slowly towards the northwest, and at the same time the two UFOs on each side of the house started to move; they flew side by side out over the
lake and disappeared behind the islands in the northeast. This led to conclude that the three objects were in contact with each other, moving in a united formation. (Source: Nordic UFO newsletter 2 - 82)

Comment: Again - all three categories are represented at the same time and interact.

These are just three selected examples taken from the report material. They are not unique, but on the contrary - rather typical of what has been seen.

These examples do not constitute irrefutable evidence of course, but are a strong indication that the three categories of activity outlined by Project Hessdalen; flash, balls of light and solid, structured  objects - must be seen as sub-components within the same overall technology - as part of a unit.

Teodorani interview

An interview from 'Unexplained Mysteries' with Italian Massimo Teodorani, Dr. of Astrophysics - and Head of the EMBLA research team / field actions in Hessdalen in the 2000s:

Teodorani's statements diverge a bit across different interviews and different scientific papers, - but essentially it seems that he thinks that UFOs in Hessdalen (and elsewhere in the world) consist of some type of "plasma phenomenon" on the one hand, and some type of structured solid objects on the other side. These can be either (A) two distinct separate phenomena that co-exist, or (B) the same phenomenon observed under different physical states, according to Teodorani.

Another exciting approach from Teodorani is that a hypothetical alien intelligence - potentially millions of years ahead of us in technological development - may be able to "program" a plasma ball to act as an information-gathering "computer":

- An exogenous probe might not be necessarily something “mechanical” as we expect from our technology, but something much more exotic. Therefore, even if we are not in a condition to extrapolate the future point of a super-civilization starting from ours, we can maybe speculate on what we could see. For instance, we cannot exclude the possibility that such a master civilization is able to instruct a “plasma ball” to acquire the functions of an “intelligent probe” based on a particle neural network that is planned to work both as a multi-sensing device and as a computer. After all, our own technology, which substantially was born only two centuries ago, is starting already now to plan a new generation of computers based both on the DNA and on quantum mechanics and it is already starting to use the very sophisticated science of nanotechnology.” (An alternative method for the scientific search for extraterrestrial intelligent life: the local SETI)

I am uncertain of what Teodorani means with "particle-neural network" and" multi-sensing device" - but I assume that it’s about networks capable of sending and receiving information, as well as processing data, something similar to what neurons do in the brain.

In other words; - with Teodorani's approach, there are no contradiction between plasma theories and theories of intelligent control...

An excerpt from the book ‘Hessdalen Lights’ (2019):

[…according to the old guest book on Project Hessdalen’s website, a Oslo couple in their twenties allegedly saw a UFO landing here when they came driving the Hessdalen main road a winter evening in the late 90s. The craft was supposed to have been as big as the main house on the farm and flashed in all colors like a Christmas tree. The couple made their way to the farm the next day, and apparently found imprints in the snow, - both after the UFO and some kind of "footprints" next to them...]

Observers' own words:

- The next day we headed up to Hessdalen to look more closely at the place we saw the UFO. About 200m from the road, we found tracks in the snow. There were three ‘landing legs’ (with footpads?) that had melted down in the snow, - right down to the ground so that the grass could be seen. In a circumference of approx. 50m there were some strange footprints. There had not been other people there, - then we would have seen (normal) footprints. What we saw the night before must have come from above.

UPDATE :

A resident of Hessdalen can tell that he was at the scene shortly afterwards. According to him, the tracks were due to moose crossing the lawn, deposited tracks, which had become large rings in the snow due to mild weather and snow melting.

Hessdalen as a portal:

In essence, there are three hypotheses that apply when there is talk of Hessdalen:

• a hitherto unknown natural phenomenon related to the particular geophysical conditions in and around the valley.
• secret military experiments with exotic technology, possibly under the auspices of NATO
• some form of 'visitation'.

With regard to hypothesis number 1, it is not suited to explain more than a fraction of the observation material, - alone. But it cannot be ruled out that several phenomena co-exist in Hessdalen. So that unknown natural phenomena may exist in parallel with structured, solid objects, ie ‘classic’ UFOs.

As for hypothesis number 2, there are military bases in the immediate vicinity of Hessdalen. But the counter arguments for a military explanation for the observed phenomena are that it is illogical with secret experiments in the valley since the 80s considering the attention – both from the media and from scientists – Hessdalen has been devoted to, both in Norway and abroad. Wouldn't it be natural to move the experiments to a more quiet and undisturbed location?

So, if the natural phenomenon is insufficient, and the military theory is illogical, we have only one option left; namely some form of visitation. Here as well, there are several alternatives; some have suggested that the visitors can be ourselves from our own future. Time travelers? Others believe that "they" may not come from afar. Maybe we share the globe with one or more other advanced technological civilizations? They can e.g. be sub-terrestrial? However, the most widespread theory and notion is that the visitors are extra-terrestrial, perhaps thousands of years ahead of us in development. Well, they must necessarily have come a long way in technological development, because the distances in space are gigantic.

J. Allen Hynek has a good illustration in that way:

“If you imagine that the thickness of a playing card represents the distance between the earth and the moon, how many cards do you need to reach the nearest star outside the sun? The number is utopian, you will need over thirty-two kilometers of playing cards."

But maybe there are shortcuts, and maybe that is exactly what Hessdalen is an example of?

Already in the 80's, some speculated that Hessdalen represented a portal that connected worlds. In the book (page 66) I quote a reader post in Adresseavisen (Trondheim newspaper):

"A "philosopher" suggests in a reader's letter the 21st or December the idea that many of the electromagnetic fields in quartz deposits - which can be found in Hessdalen - can be" site "for vessels that materialize. Can Hessdalen serve as a kind of "portal" into our time and our world?"

There is a lot of quartz in the Hessdalen mountains. All in all, the mountains in and around Hessdalen have a complex geology with long traditions for mining. There are many old, abandoned mines around the valley and just south of Hessdalen lies Norway's largest occurrence of ore - untouched. Iron, copper and zinc.

Large deposits of ore cause strong magnetic fields...

Recently I came across a book that, among other things, is about portals: "Demon Haunted: True stories from the John Zaffis Vault".

Under the section "Geophysical signatures" I read:

"Portals have one or more certain geophysical characteristics. One is marked magnetic anomalies. Many of the portal areas have high concentrations of magnetic or diamagnetic content to the soil, such as iron, magnetite, and quartz.

Other characteristics are underground water, especially if it comes to the surface; natural caves; mining tunnels; large bodies of water, especially running; and swampy areas.”

This is almost a description of Hessdalen! Everything listed above exists in Hessdalen, including natural caves; mining tunnels; large bodies with water and swampy areas.

Now I do not know which sources the book operates with, and what scientific basis it is for the author's claims. BUT I have difficulty accepting that the descriptions should overlap that much based on pure coincidence.

Finally; what if Hessdalen represents something even more exotic?

More and more physicists assume that our physical world is only one plan or dimension in a possible multidimensional universe. The UFO phenomenon can be caused by interactions between our own and one or more of these dimensions. Maybe we live side by side with multidimensional creatures? Just that we don't see or hear anything about them?

We know that infrared and ultraviolet light exist. We can use it, but we cannot see it. Just as we have limitations in hearing, where we only perceive fluctuations between 20 and 20,000 Herz, we may have similar problems with the vision? What about the animals that at least have better hearing than us (eg a dog whistle), do they have better vision too? Is it about thin boundaries? So there are small "accidents" that cause these events?

Already during the first field action of Project Hessdalen in 1984, UFO phenomena were registered on radar. They made registrations under visual observation, but there were also examples of radar records where no visual observation was made. One could clearly follow an object from A to B through the valley on radar, but one could not see anything with the naked eye ... Was the phenomenon on another frequency? Lower or higher in the electromagnetic spectrum than visible light?

I’ve seen phenomena appear out of nowhere, be visible in minutes, then just disappear as suddenly as they appeared myself. "Where did they come from, and where did they go", asked Leif Havik in connection with some of his observations in Hessdalen…

Do we need to revolutionize our understanding of the physical world in order to understand the phenomena in Hessdalen - in order to understand the UFO phenomenon?

Laser experiment during Project Hessdalen's first field action:

Several witnesses had reported that the UFOs (in Hessdalen) had responded if a strong light source was aimed at them (eg, a powerful flashlight, or a car headlight).

Project Hessdalen wanted to test these claims, so they got a laser for the purpose.

Excerpt from 'Hessdalen lights' (2019) page 96, chapter 11:

“ We used the laser, and pointed it towards a flashing light, in two different cases, totally 9 times. 8 of these times, there was a reaction. In the first case, there was a regular flashing light, slowly moving towards north, on Sunday 12 February at 7.35 pm. The flashing had been regular all the time we had seen the light. The light moved slowly. From the first time we saw it in the south, until it disappeared in the north, it took about 15 minutes. When this light was in the northern part of mount Finnsåhøgda, we pointed the laser towards it for the first time. At once, it changed the flashing sequence: From a regular flashing light, it became a regular double-flashing light:

Flash.Flash.......Flash.Flash.......Flash.Flash......

After about 10 seconds, we put the laser down, at once it became a regular single-flashing light again:

Flash......Flash......Flash...... 

After about 10 seconds we repeated this again. It was repeated totally 4 times before it went out of sight. All the times, we got this double-flashing, when the laser was pointing at it.

The second case, the same type of light came from the north and moved towards south. It was the same day, Sunday 12 February at 8.41 pm. When the light was in the west, we pointed the laser towards it. The same thing happened now; it changed to a double-flashing light when the laser pointed towards it. This time we did it 5 times. Only the last of these times did we not get any double-flashing. But 4 of these 5 times, we got it.

The test was done like this: Kurt Persson used binoculars looking at the light. He told what he was seeing all the time; he said: "flash...flash...flash..." . I (Erling Strand) used the laser. He could not see where I was pointing with the laser. When I raised the laser, pointing at the light, he said: "flash.flash.....flash.flash.....flash.flash......"

As if this wasn't enough - about a week later, what follows happened:

“ Leif Havik was alone in the caravan. He was taking on a survival suit. Åge Moe (farmer in Hessdalen) and Edvin Kværnes (from Ålen village), had just arrived at the caravan. They waited outside; Moe stood on the north side of the door to the carriage, and Kværnes waited on the south side. They were all going to the Øyungnesset, to observe from there. 

When Leif went out of the caravan, a red light swirled around his legs before it disappeared. Moe said, "Look at the reflex". That was the only explanation he could find at that time. Leif saw at once that the light was of the same kind as the laser we used. At this time, this laser was in Oslo.

To make sure it really was the same type of light, as from our laser, we brought the laser up again on February 25th. Moe had never seen a laser before. We took him to the caravan and it was about the same time of day. When I illuminated the snow at our feet, Moe said, “It was just what I saw! But it was a little weaker." Then I illuminated the floor of the caravan, and he said, "It was a little stronger than that". 

We haven't found any explanation for this light, and I don't think we will either. During a conversation, Leif said, "If only I had put my palm over it, then maybe I could  have seen where it came from. But I didn't think about it a that time." 

Seconds after the light was gone, they looked straight up, but nothing was seen. It was cloudy weather, but just above the caravan there was an opening in the cloud cover, and the stars could be seen through this opening.”

Undulating motion and other recognizable patterns across UFO data:

Here is a very interesting recording taken by the "Blue Box" - the automatic measuring station (AMS) in Hessdalen, administered by Østfold University College.

Notice the jerky, undulating motion. This has been reported numerous times in Hessdalen - and also internationally in UFO context. We even saw this pattern of motion ourself last year - as described in the book (chapter 5, page 34).

I'm concerned about recognizable patterns across UFO data;  pattern of movement, shape, light and color composition, sound and smell etc. For when independent witnesses, separated geographically as well as in time, without the slightest opportunity to have contact or influenced each other, describe the same thing - down to a level of detail that makes it absurd to blame it on chance, then everything indicates that what they report is genuine and true.

There is a striking correlation between reports from Hessdalen and international reports from the US, UK, Australia, South America etc. to the extent that one can conclude that the phenomena in Hessdalen = the UFO phenomenon globally. In other words, any scientific research results obtained in Hessdalen can be generalized to the UFO phenomenon globally and totally.
